How to add a waste meter
A waste meter in Properate is one waste code you record quantities against — "1211 – Newspaper and magazine paper" or "1141 – Clean timber", for example. If your waste data comes from an integration with Franzefoss or Norsk Gjenvinning, the meters are created automatically. If you record the figures yourself, you create one meter per fraction.
Waste meters are added from the Waste page.
How to add a waste meter
- Open the building you want to work on. See How to switch building and search for a building.
- Go to Waste in the sidebar.
- Click Add waste meter.
- Choose the Waste code from the dropdown. The list shows the code and the name together, and you can search it.
- Choose the Unit.
- Confirm, and enter the quantities.
Note: Codes you already have a meter for don't appear in the list. One code means one meter, so if you can't find the code you're after, it probably already exists — look for it in the table on the waste page.
What the waste code determines
The code isn't just a name. It decides which fraction the quantity counts as, and therefore:
- Sorting degree — what share of the waste is sorted
- Number of fractions — which BREEAM-NOR v6, Wst 03 (M1) sets requirements for with "At least 6 different fractions"
Record residual waste against a code for clean timber and both figures go wrong. The codes follow the waste guide "Waste in operation" from Grønn Byggallianse, and the 157 codes in the list are the same ones you'll find there.

Frequently asked questions
What if my waste doesn't fit any code?
The code list has its own codes for mixed and processed waste. Choose the one closest to the actual fraction — putting it under a cleaner code than it is produces an artificially high sorting degree.
Can I delete a waste meter?
Meters you created manually can be edited and removed. Meters arriving from an integration are governed by their source.
Why is the button greyed out?
You have read access. Both Add waste meter and Register waste require write access.
Does the unit I choose matter?
Yes. The unit belongs to the meter and every quantity is interpreted against it, so mixing kilos and tonnes on the same code gives totals that don't add up.
Tip!
Create all the fractions you actually source-separate at once, even the ones with small quantities. The number of fractions is itself a BREEAM-NOR requirement, and a fraction that hasn't been created doesn't count — however diligently it's sorted out in the building.
