How to attach a task to a component
If a component needs checking, servicing or replacing, you create the task directly from the component. The task is then tied to the part, and the history follows the component onwards.
How to create a task on a component
- Open the building you want to work on. See How to switch building and search for a building.
- Go to FDV > Components in the sidebar.
- Open the component.
- Click Add task.
- Fill in the task and save.
The task is now attached to the component.
How to create the component from a task
It works the other way too. If you're in a task and discover the part isn't registered, use Create component from there — so the task and the component are linked immediately, rather than the component being registered later with the link missing.
Why the link is worth something
Without a link, a task is just a task: it gets done, closed and lost in the history. With a link, the component gains a history:
- How many times this part has been repaired
- What was done last time
- Whether it's the same fault recurring
That history is what lets you answer whether a component should be replaced rather than repaired one more time. The number of open tasks also appears on the system in the FDV building overview, as {n} open tasks — see How to read the FDV building overview.
Frequently asked questions
Can I attach several tasks to the same component?
Yes. Each repair becomes its own task, and together they make up the component's history.
What's the difference between a task and operational information?
A task is something to be done, with an owner and a status. Operational information is documentation with no follow-up. If somebody needs to act, it has to be a task — see How to add operational information to a system.

Tip!
Create the task from the component rather than from the task list when you know which part it concerns. The link is awkward to add afterwards, and it's precisely that link which lets the next person see this fan has been replaced twice in three years.
