How to attach files to a component
Documentation belonging to a physical part — a datasheet, an installation guide, a photo of the nameplate — goes on the component itself. Then it sits where the next person will look: on the component, not in an archive of a thousand files.
How to attach files to a component
- Open the building you want to work on. See How to switch building and search for a building.
- Go to FDV > Components in the sidebar.
- Open the component from the list.
- Scroll down to Files.
- Upload the files.
Note: The component has to be saved before you can upload. Try it on a component you've just started and the message says Save the component before uploading files. See How to create a component.
What's worth attaching to the component
Whatever is specific to this part:
- The datasheet for the actual model
- A photo of the nameplate — type designation and serial number, so nobody has to climb up and read it next time
- Installation or service instructions
- Service reports for the part

How to delete a file from the component
Delete the file on the component. If it fails, the message says Couldn't delete file. Try again.
Frequently asked questions
Does the file also end up in the file archive?
Files uploaded on a component belong to the component. If a document should be searchable in the archive alongside other documentation, upload it under Files and label it there.
Why can't I upload?
The most common cause is that the component hasn't been saved yet. Otherwise, uploading requires write access.
Can I attach the same file to several components?
If you have twenty identical fans, the datasheet is the same for all of them. In that case the file archive with a system attachment is often a better place than uploading the same PDF twenty times.
An error when uploading?
The message Couldn't upload file. Try again. means the file didn't get through.
Tip!
Photograph the nameplate with your phone while you're standing at the component, and attach it right away. It's the one document no supplier sends you, and the one most often missing when somebody needs to order a spare part.
